Black Bear Tracking

Lumbering or slumbering, a black bear is equally delightful and invigorating to see. Meaning no harm, they are much like a raccoon, being clever opportunists constantly in search of filling either their stomachs or curiosity, only multiplied in size by tenfold, or more. When this search lands them in a precarious situation, their sheer mass adds much more steam behind any blunder or misunderstanding, however most of their advances are a pure bluff, only adding to their charming personality.

Being wise in the woods includes being respectful, and being respectful means knowing the local fauna. As black bears are pushed out of their habitats, they are slowly, but surely making their way into previously “bear-free” zones. Knowing the signs of bear is quite rewarding, but better yet, it allows a safe and respectful presence.

SCAT

Photographed here, this scat was found along side a main game trail near the river in a forested patch of woods. Measuring nearly 12″ long, and 1.5″ wide at its widest diameter, the bear scat consists primarily of berry seeds, and fibrous bits constituting much of a black bear’s diet.
